Trail Overview
Lovell Gulch (Trail #706) is Woodland Park's signature local trail — a 5.2-mile loop through Pike National Forest that starts right at the edge of town. It's the trail locals recommend first, the one you'll hike with your dog on Saturday mornings, and the one that reminds you why you moved to the mountains in the first place.
The trail features a "balloon on a string" shape — a flat 1-mile approach trail leads to a 3.75-mile loop that climbs to a ridge with views, then descends back through the forest. Along the way, you'll cross a small creek, discover tiny caves tucked into rock formations, and enjoy a mix of sun-dappled forest and open ridge walking.
What to Expect
The first mile is nearly level, leading north out of Woodland Park along the edge of the timber. After crossing a stream, the trail forks — go right (counterclockwise) for the easier and more scenic experience. This takes you through a lovely meadow alongside a small creek for about 1.5 miles before climbing to the ridge top.
The ridge section offers spectacular views of Pikes Peak to the south, though the trail follows power lines for a stretch which slightly detracts from the scenery. The descent from the ridge is the steepest section. Turn right at the fork and you're on your way back to the trailhead.
Getting There
From downtown Woodland Park, turn right onto Baldwin Street at the traffic light near McDonald's. Continue as it becomes Rampart Range Road. After passing Lee Circle, take the first left — the parking lot and trailhead are at the end of this drive, next to the city road maintenance building.
Tips for Hikers
- Go counterclockwise (right at the fork) for the best experience — easier climb, better views on the descent
- In winter, bring microspikes — the north-facing sections can be icy
- Dogs are welcome on leash — and they love the creek crossing
- Great for mountain biking too — the loop sees regular bike traffic
- Keep your eyes peeled for mule deer and the small caves along the trail that kids love to explore
- The trailhead can be busy on weekends — weekday mornings offer more solitude
Post-Hike
You're literally minutes from downtown Woodland Park. Turn right on Rampart Range Road back to Baldwin Street. Cafe Leo is perfect for a morning coffee and breakfast burrito. Joanie's Deli does great sandwiches for lunch. Or head to Hungry Bear for their famous all-day breakfast.
